THE GREAT YOLO COUNTY SHOOT OUT
(UNSOLVED GORE FILE CASE)

This Gore file case, is yet another one of the secondary cases that came out of the Leo Garcia (Yolo County) kidnapping case.   Which according to the narc’s:
1939 - M 39 Assaulted and shot another man in controversy while both smoking marihuana. Convicted   -- Article by James C. Munch; "UN Bulletin on Narcotics"-1966 Issue 2

1939 - M - 39 - Assaulted and shot another man in controversy while both smoking marihuana. - Convicted   -- 6th conference report - INEOA 1965

In April, 1939, the Division of Narcotic Enforcement was asked to investigate a situation at Woodland, California.   Three young men had been arrested for extortion, grand theft and robbery. . . . In this investigation it was uncovered that in 1937 a young man, 29 years of age, had shot another man in a controversy over Marihuana.   The assailant escaped at the time, but was later apprehended at Fresno by State authorities and returned to Woodland, where he was convicted and sentenced.   -- MARIHUANA - State of Calif. Dept. of Penology, Narcotic Enforcement (excerpt from report for the year 1939)

Although we have not been able to establish 100% positive proof on the matter, the following is why it is believed that one “Ted Albright” (who was the fourth kidnapper, was the individual in question.
  •   First the information (obviously) comes from the testimony of one of the three other kidnappers.   And Ted Albright, along with this previous activities (probably through bragging) would have been known to them.

  •   Second, he was not mentioned (or present it seems) in the original (April 1939) investigation.   Which leads one to believe that he had made a successful escape at the time.

  •   While true that the Calif. report indicates that perpetrator was 29 yr-of-age, federal mentions indicate that he was 39, which was Ted Albright age at the time.

  •   But most important of which, an intensive search of all Calif. State prisoners coming from Yolo County at the time (1939,1940) indicate that there were no other matches.
Thus, our reasoning to believe that the above reports are all talking about Ted Albright as being our man.

NOTE:   At a future time, it is our hope to search through the old “Fresno Bee” as well as the “Woodland Daily Democrat,” newspaper archives, for more information.
