ANSLINGER'S GORE FILE
TERRY DORRIS
THE MARIHUANA SELLING HOTEL BELL-HOP
(UNSOLVED GORE FILE CASE)
Name: - Terry Dorris - Location: - San Francisco, Ca. - Date: - Jan 16, 1935

What the Narc’s were claiming
CALIFORNIA - San Francisco On January 16, 1935, Officers of the Division of Narcotic Enforcement, State of California, arrested Terry Doris on a charge of possession of Indian Hemp.   This party (person) was selling marihuana to bell boys in various hotels in the tenderloin district for resale to guests, and was also known as a "fence” and small-time gangster.   When arrested he had in his room 76 cans of marihuana, a cigarette making machine and several hundred cigarettes - ready for distribution; also three revolvers, a quantity/number of stolen watches, etc, which he stated he had received in exchange for the drug.   He was convicted and sentenced to the county jail for one year.   --- ILLICIT TRAFFIC IN MARIHUANA - aka Gore File

THAT WHICH WE KNOW
As we all know the Narc’s lie (this website gives proof of that), and as our purpose here is to ID Anslinger’s Gore File cases, we thus can’t simply take their word for it that any-of-their stated incidents actually took place.   We can only establish this via independent accounts; usually contemporary newspaper articles, etc.   Articles that at present we have not been able to locate.   However, we have been able to locate the following:
City Directory
[ San Francisco, City Directory – era, early 1930’s ]

This San Francisco, City Directory (a sort of phone book), clearly shows that there was indeed a Mr. Terry Doris (sometimes spelled Dorris), and that he was indeed in some way associated with the Hotel and hospitality industry.   And we’ve been able to locate the following newspaper article:
Two Men Held on Rumster Charges
Terry Dorris, 20, arrested on charges of sale, possession and transportation of liquor after he had allegedly delivered liquor to prohibitions agents at Turk and Jones streets, today had been held for trial by United States commissioner Ernest E. Williams.

Dorris is held in default of $1000 bail.   C. Champion, arrested at the same intersection on similar charges, is scheduled to appear for arraignment today.   --- S.F. News Call Bulletin – April 29, 1932
SFCall1932-04-29
[ S.F. News Call Bulletin – April 29, 1932 ]

So obviously, Mr. Dorris did exist, and he had a history of (ah) providing for the wants and needs of the Hotel guests.   HOWEVER, for our purposes here, we still have not been able to locate any exact mentions of the incident in question.   Without doubt we will in the future be able to do so, and without doubt, this incident probably has a much, much larger story behind it than what Anslinger originally claimed.
