HARRY ANSLINGER'S GORE – MISSOURI

MISSOURI - TEMPORARY WEBSITE
      – LOCATION OF FUTURE WEBSITE

ReeferMadness
Due to lack of material resources, at the present time we can only post this temporary website dealing with the STATE OF MISSOURI during the Reefer Madness Era.   It is our hope to have a full website for the state running sometime in the future.   But (again) due to lack of resources this will be a long while.   For now we hope that this quickie, quickie will be of some help to researchers into the era.

ANSLINGER'S GORE FILE
MISSOURI
To our knowledge, there are only four Gore File cases associated with the State of Missouri, and of those TWO of them (the Two that we have been able to ID), are FAKES.

Fake
meaning that it either did not happen or that the facts have been so twisted around as to be meaningless.

What the Narc’s were claiming
A newspaper in St. Louis reported after an investigation this year that it had discovered marijuana “dens,” all frequented by children of high-school age.  The same sort of story came from Missouri, Ohio, Louisiana, Colorado   -- American Magazine “Marijuana, Assassin of Youth” By H.J Anslinger - July 1937

For example, a few years ago the startling discovery was made in St. Louis scores of youngsters of high school age had become victims of the weed.   A St. Louis paper at the time quoted one gentleman of the byways as saying, "The worst thing about that loco weed is the way these kids go for them.   Most of them, boys and girls, are just punks and when they get high on the stuff you can write your own ticket."   ----- The story is told by the same newspaper of a young man who became an addict and had eventually to be confined in an institution for the mentally diseased.   In referring to him, one of his friends told an investigating reporter that "he was a swell fellow until marihuana got him.   Like the rest of us, he thought the weed wasn't habit-forming and had no idea of the possible consequences of smoking it.   He smoked so many he couldn't quit.   Finally he went crazy and his folks put him in a sanitarium."   Further quotations from the St. Louis paper, which illustrate what occurred among the young people who became victim of this weed through the encouragement of the peddlers, who made claims of the weed's value as a "love potion" and as the means by which they could easily become "the life of the party", follow: Among these is the story of a girl student, still in her teens, who told a reporter she had seen some of her friends under the influence, and named a boy and a girl who had lost their senses so completely after smoking marihuana that they eloped and were married.   -- INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL DIGEST – Sep, 1937

CAUTION -- A WORD OF WARNING:

Here is a good example of an incident that both DID and DID NOT happen.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED:
While the incident really did take place, NONE of the numerous newspaper accounts that we have been able to obtain, make any mention of Oscar Ashworth as a Medical Marihuana addict.   Given the date [at the very height of the Reefer Madness campaign] it can be assumed that such a factor would NOT have gone unnoticed by the news media.   In addition the museum has been able to locate the following statement--taken from the book "DESIGNS IN SCARLET By Courtney Ryley Cooper 1939
SMOKING GUN:
In a case at St. Joseph, Missouri, where a man was convicted of a murderous rape attack upon a young girl, a newspaper made the statement that he was a marihuana fiend and that he had committed his crime while under the influence of the drug.   Federal sources reported that as far as could be learned, the whole story originated in the mind of a cub reporter who asked the sex-murderer after he had been sentenced:  "Why didn't you tell the court that you smoked marihuana cigarettes?"   ---- DESIGNS IN SCARLET By Courtney Ryley Cooper 1939
As a technical note, Courtney Ryley Cooper was Harry Anslinger [American's first drug czar and originator of the Federal anti-Medical Marihuana laws], own personal ghost-writer, and as such had personal knowledge of and total access to all Official Gore File Cases.

In other words, the narc's knew [right from the get-go] that the case was bogus, but still continued to tout it as an example of a Medical Marihuana caused crime.   It fact, as the following quotation shows, it was still being officially used by the narc's all the way up until the late 1960's.

"Through the kindness of Commissioners Anslinger and Giordano of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Narcotics, an opportunity was afforded to review various authenticated Case Reports in the files of the Bureau as typical of the relationships of various crimes committed by individuals after use and while under the influence of marihuana (usually smoked).   As representative, table 3* reports details on 69 such cases.   This objective evidence [Ha Ha] supports published statements of the association between the use of marihuana and various types of crime."   -- article by James C. MUNCH ; "UN Bulletin on Narcotics"-1966 Issue 2

MISSOURI'S
UNSOLVED GORE FILE CASES
Try as we might, the museum has NOT been able to actually verify that any of the following actually took place.   NOTE; this does not mean that such or such an incident DID NOT TAKE place, only that up until now we have not been able to locate any actual evidence (other than what the narc’s are saying) that they actually did.

POSSESSION
MISSOURI- Kansas City On January 12, 1936, Marley Martinez, Hermn Augustus Tally and Frederick Paris Harrington were arrested at Kansas City charged with possession of 23 marihuana cigarettes.   Each defendant was fined $250.00   --- ILLICIT TRAFFIC IN MARIHUANA - aka Gore File

ROBBERY
Kansas City, Mo., Dec 24, 1967----A 20-year old man and a juvenile worked to-together in an armed robbery of a local tavern.   When arrested, both suspects stated they never would have committed the crime except that they had been smoking marihuana.   -- Congressional Record -- April 4, 1968

MUSEUM NEWSPAPER INDEX:
NO, this index of (what may or may not be) Reefer Madness Newspaper articles is NOT COMPLETE and in fact is anything but.   At best it should be thought of as a starting point for historical scholars doing research into the origin of the anti-Medical Cannabis laws.
