PENNSYLVANIA -Lebanon On November 21, 1935, Henry Liles(colored)was arrested in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, by State officers for selling marihuana cigarettes. He was prosecuted under the State marihuana Law, convicted and sentenced to serve one year in the Lebanon County Jail. -- On searching the residence of Henry Liles, at the time of his arrest, the officers found about two pounds of marihuana prepared for smoking and about one-half pound of seed. PENNSYLVANIA -Harrisburg On January 8, 1936, the sale of marihuana cigarettes to boys in the CCC Camps in Lebanon county, was broken upwith the jailingof a dopesalesman. [S]-Jan 8, 1936 P5 - “Curb Traffic In Narcotics At CCC Camps”
“The Department of Health announced today that it has stopped the traffic in marihuana cigarets being sold to boys in CCC camps in Lebanon county. Through the work of agents of the division of Narcotic Control, Henry Lite, Negro, was arrested and charged with illegal sale of narcotics. Confronted in Lebanon county court with a boy from the CCC camp at Lickdale to whom he was alleged to have sold cigaretts, Lite pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year in the county jail and fined $100 and costs. Agents of the Bureau of Narcotics Control were, called in by Lebanon county authorities when the traffic in the Mexican drug was discovered. Dr. John H. Remig, an inspector for the Division swore out a warrant for Lite’s arrest on information supplied at the CCC camp. Dr. Paul Rogers, chief chemist of the Division of Narcotic Control testified in court that cigarets sold by Lile were made from Marihuana.

PENNSYLVANIA - Malvern & Howellville During the Spring of 1935, reliable information was received to the effect that a field located on the Lincoln Highway near Malvern, and another one located on the Swedeboro and Paoli Road near Howellville, were under cultivation for

PENNSYLVANIA -Malvern On July 9, 1935, police found a field of about one acre used for raising marihuana located near Marvern, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The marihuana had been planted in uniform rows and had been cultivated to increase production. It was seized, cut down and destroyed by burning. The officers estimated the amount destroyed, usable for smoking, to have been about 150 pounds.
The owner was arrested, prosecuted and convicted under the State Marihuana Law, and sentenced to serve one year in the Chester County Jail and fined $300. --- ILLICIT TRAFFIC IN MARIHUANA - aka Gore File

PENNSYLVANIA -Howellville On July 16, 1935, Police found a field of about one half acres used for raising marihuana located near Howellville, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The marihuana had not been planted in uniform rows. The growth indicated the seed had been scattered or sown and had not been cultivated to increase production. The marihuana was seized, cut down and destroyed by burning. The officers estimated the amount destroyed usable for smoking to have been about 100 pounds. PENNSYLVANIA -Langeleth On August 13, 1935, a field of about three acres used for raising marihuana was located near Langeloth, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The marihuana was planted in uniform rows and concealed by the planting of several rows of corn around the outside of the marihuana field. It was seized, cut down and destroyed by burning. The officers estimated the amount destroyed, usable for smoking, to have been about 250 pounds. The owner was arrested, prosecuted and convicted under the State Marihuana Law, receiving a sentence of 3 months in the Washington County Jail and fined $500. PENNSYLVANIA -Quarryville On August 22, 1935, information was received that marihuana was being raised in a field near Quarryville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
The officers made an investigation and located the field, as reported, but saw on arrival that someone had destroyed the marihuana several days before by cutting it down and burning it. The remaining part of the plants or stalks in the plot, about one more in area, indicated the marihuana seed was sown and not planted in uniform rows. PENNSYLVANIA -Goosetown On November 11, 19.35, a field of about 5 acres used for raising marihuana was located in the mountains near Goosetown, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Upon investigation the officers found part of the marihuana had been harvested and part of it destroyed by plowing it under. It was planted in uniform rows of corn and well concealed. -- On searching the small sheds near the field the officers found about two pounds of marihuana prepared for smoking and about two pounds of marihuana seed in glass jars. POSSESSION
PENNSYLVANIA - Pittsburgh On February 14, 1936, Jose Rodriequez was arrested by Pittsburgh Police for possession of 402 grains of marihuana. He was first fined $10.00 and costs, but was rearrested by police and taken before an Alderman, who held him for the Grand Jury under bond. Malvern and Howelville, Pa - On July 1 and 16, 1935, respectively, State enforcement officers visited certain farms situated near Malvern and Howelville, Pa., and discovered 2 1/2 acres of cannabis under cultivation concealed by fields of growing corn. The fields were destroyed. Although it was not possible to estimate correctly the amount of cannabis which might have been harvested if the plants had been allowed to mature, the opinion was expressed that the fields would have yielded approximately 27 pounds of the drug. The defendants, Luis Manon and Michael Ruiz, were held for prosecution.

COATESVILLEI, PA. -- 1937 Acting on information that Joe Gracia was selling marihuana in Coatesville, Pa., narcotic officers assisted by local officers made purchases from him totaling approximately 2 pounds, then arrested Gracia and seized from the basement of his home one large trunk containing 487 ounces of marihuana and one small wooden drum containing 328 ounces of marihuana. Gracia was tried, convicted, and sentenced to serve 3 years in a Federal penitentiary. -- The Traffic in Opium and Other Dangers Drugs (1937)

PHILADELPHIA, PA. - On Oct. 22 and 23, 1937, two plots of marihuana were found in the heart of the city of Philadelphia. The marihuana---about 3,000 plants on one plot and 3,500 plants on the other---was cut and burned by Federal and State officers.

From Philadelphia recently the papers reported the following story: An alleged "hop joint," fitted out with cheap bunks wherein addicts could lie and hide their troubles behind clouds of marihuana smoke was uncovered recently by Captain Kronbar and a squad of men when they raided a place on juniper street, below Lombard.
Approximately $10,000 worth of marihuana was seized and two women and two men, were arrested. The seizure of the drug, which was outlawed by Pennsylvania last September, is the largest ever made here. More than one hundred pounds of marihuana, some of it rolled into cigarettes, some packaged apparently for delivery, still more in the plain weed state, were seized. Recently a number of arrests were made in Pittsburgh's "Hill" district, breaking up a ring of marihuana peddlers and addicts. Three Mexicans and one Negro were arrested in one of the raids and a quantity of marihuana was confiscated. --
WHO WAS JOSEPH M. SCHMUCKER
Unless you live in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, you might never have heard of this guy. But to students of Reefer Madness-ology, he was a legend in his own day. According to the Gazette Bulletin (Dec. 22, 1938)
"PUBLISHING PAMPHLET ON MARIHUANA"Unfortunately, try as we may, this museum has never been able to obtain a copy of the actual pamphlet. The Williamsport (Pa.) police department, local libraries, etc., and nothing. The following is all we know about it:
"Capt. Joseph M. Schmucker Writes About Evils of Weed. --- To Distribute Copies In Schools.
Capt. Joseph M. Schmucker of the Williamsport Police Department who for the past year has been off giving lectures on the evils of marihuana to high schools, temperance unions and other civic groups throughout the state. Announced last night he has prepared a five page pamphlet entitled “The Marihuana Menace.”. . . Montoursville High School and the county W.C.T.U. It is Schmucker’s aim to have a copy sent to all schools in the state and later to distribute the pamphlet to all who may desire them. They will be free of charge he said. From newspaper accounts, we know that he was very active in public events, police fraternal organizations etc. But by far (as the section below from a High School year book shows), his major interest was in young people.

He was also politically astute, running for and elected county Sheriff.
A pity, if only he (and a few others like him), had been on our side there is a good chance that the anti-Medical Cannabis laws would have never gotten on the books.
