ANSLINGER'S GORE FILE
R. A. Redmond

Under normal circumstances the R.A. Redmond incident would have remained just a simple arrest statistic.   However, Anslinger himself (probably because of the confrontational nature of the arrest) introduced it into his Gore File.

On our part, we had a lot of trouble even documenting the fact that such an arrest even took place.   Newspaper checks, etc., showed nothing.   However, we were finally able to obtain a copy of this (at the time confidential) Nov. 24, 1939 issue of the “Weekly Narcotic Intelligence Bulletin,” which included a page on the R.A. Redmond affair.

CASE OF R.A. REDMOND, EL PASO, TEXAS
Customs Inspectors at El Paso determined to search the person of R.A. REDMOND when he entered the United States from Juarez.   When the search was instituted, REDMOND removed from his clothing a tobacco sack which was suspended from a button, placed the sack in his mouth, tearing it with his teeth.   The tearing of the sack permitted several marihuana cigarettes to fall upon the floor, whereupon REDMOND recovered 1 1/3 cigarettes and swallowed them, together with the paper covering.   The inspectors did succeed in recovering one cigarette, but not until they were attacked by REDMOND.

REDMOND stated that he has been smoking marihuana for approximately eight months, and, without doubt, the circumstances illustrate the effect that the marihuana had upon him, as it is reported that he possessed almost superhuman strength, it taking the combined efforts of two officers to subdue him.

The defendant is being held for prosecution.
