MUSEUM OF REEFER MADNESS MAGAZINE LIST: Last update = Aug 15, 2012 NOTE: This is what is known as a working Index. That means that we are actually utilizing it to keep track of magazine articles that the museum is actively working with. It also means that it is a bit scatter brained in its makeup. From our (the museums) point of view, we could either have a beautiful great looking Index, or we could have something that we could actually use – we chose the latter. Also note; there are a lot of boxes that look something like “[S]-“, just ignore them. The museum uses them to keep track of where things are stored and in what format etc. [A] ACE- HIGH MAGAZINE Author: Bedford-Jones, H [S] - June 1, 1928 ---"The badman's brand", Two veteran gun-slingers battle a band of marihuana-mad Mexicans, H. [ According to Erick Goode -- The same cannot be said for the work of Gardikas ("Hashish and Crime"). A police officer and head of the Greek Criminal Service in Athens, Gardikas reviewed 379 cases of individuals who were arrested for publicly using cannabis between 1919 and 1950. In the sample, 117 cases were first arrested for cannabis offenses and, after their release, became "confirmed criminals," having been arrested for a total of 420 offenses in the period studied. The fact that they became criminal only after their involvement with hashish ---1970 - The Marijuana Smokers by Erich Goode ] [After reading the article, all I can say is Junk Science. Example -- The study looks at ALL criminals between the years 1919 to 1950, yet only 379 Medical Marihuana users could be located. And only 326 of these were actual criminals (other than the Medical Marihuana). Pure junk science. ESQUIRE [Box M1] [S] - “Marihuana and a pistol” By Chester B. (I guess there is hope after all.) Already, statements such as, “The prevalent opinion that anyone who smokes a marihuana cigarette … will have criminal impulses is an error” start to appear. The author of the article appears to be the editor himself, Col. James M. Phalen (retired). He says in so many words that we didn’t know what we were talking about, and he implies very strongly that we have been taken in by propaganda circulated for somewhat obscure reasons by the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Colonel Phalen snorts almost audibly at our suggestion that the prolonged use of marijuana, or hashish, leads to the “slow but progressive mental and moral deterioration of the victim.” He does not go quite so far as to assert that the stuff is absolutely harmless and safe to give to the kiddies along with the daily dosage of cod liver oil. But he does put marijuana in category with other stimulants of everyday and more or less respectable usage, “such as alcohol, tobacco, the popular soft-drinks and coffee.” In short, says the editor. Marijuana is not a narcotic, its use is a habit in the sense as with the stimulants mentioned. In no sense or degree does it predispose to narcotic addiction. It is recommended to the narcotic agent that he smoke a few of these marijuana cigarettes. . . Perhaps by this means the [Federal Narcotics] Agency can be brought to an understanding that its campaign is largely a witch hunt.
